Affordability Check
Also known as Financial Risk Check, Source of Funds Check, Affordability Assessment
By Abhinav VasudevanReviewed Editorial policy
In short
An affordability check is an operator's assessment of whether a customer can sustain their level of gambling, sometimes requiring financial documents. It is a licence obligation in several markets and is contested by both industry and players.
An affordability check assesses whether a customer’s gambling is sustainable relative to their means. Operators in several regulated markets are required to carry them out once spend passes certain thresholds.
What triggers one
- Spend thresholds: net losses over a period, with the level varying by jurisdiction and operator
- Rapid escalation in deposits or stakes
- Markers of harm: late-night play, chasing patterns, repeated failed deposits, cancelled withdrawals
- VIP status, where checks are mandatory in the UK before status is granted
What may be requested
Ranging from light to intrusive:
- Confirmation of occupation and income
- Open-source verification, credit reference data, public records
- Payslips, bank statements, tax returns
- Evidence of source of funds for large deposits
Accounts are commonly restricted or suspended until documents are provided, which is where most of the friction arises.
Why it is contested
This is genuinely disputed, and both objections have force.
The case for. People have lost very large sums, and operators had the data to see it happening. UK regulatory investigations repeatedly found customers losing amounts obviously inconsistent with their circumstances while operators continued to accept deposits and offer incentives. Substantial penalties have followed.
The case against. Requiring payslips to place a bet is a significant intrusion, applied to an activity adults are legally entitled to pursue. Industry argues it drives customers to unlicensed operators where no protections exist at all. A concern regulators take seriously, since the black market is the obvious failure mode.
There is also a fairness objection: thresholds set in absolute terms affect low earners disproportionately while wealthy customers pass easily.
The direction of travel
The UK has moved toward frictionless checks using credit reference and open-banking data for the majority of customers, reserving document requests for a small high-spending minority. The intent is to reduce intrusion while retaining the protection.
Other jurisdictions have taken different approaches. Germany’s cross-operator monthly deposit cap achieves a similar end without individual assessment.
Practical notes
- Respond promptly. Restricted accounts are not released until documents are reviewed
- Withdrawals are usually blocked during a check, which is the most common source of complaint
- Refusing is permitted, and the account will be closed with the balance returned after standard KYC
- Checks recur as spend increases; passing once is not permanent
Common questions
Why is a casino asking for my payslip?
Because affordability checks are a licence obligation once spend passes certain thresholds. Operators face substantial penalties for failing to act on customers losing amounts inconsistent with their circumstances.
What happens if I refuse an affordability check?
You can refuse, and the account will be closed with your balance returned after standard verification. Withdrawals are usually blocked while a check is open, which is the most common source of complaint.
