Ante
Also known as Antes, Big Blind Ante

In short
An ante is a small forced bet contributed by every player before a hand, in addition to the blinds. It increases the pot and pressures players into contesting more hands.
An ante is a compulsory contribution from every player at the table, not just two. It sits alongside the blinds rather than replacing them.
Why it exists
Antes make folding expensive. If a hand costs you nothing to sit out, the correct strategy against a tight table is to fold relentlessly. Antes remove that option by charging you regardless.
The effect is to increase the pot relative to the cost of entering it, which mathematically justifies playing more hands. A pot containing blinds plus nine antes is worth attacking with a much wider range than one containing blinds alone.
This is deliberate: antes exist to speed tournaments up and force confrontation.
Where they appear
Antes are almost exclusively a tournament feature, introduced at later levels once blinds have risen. Cash games occasionally use them at high stakes.
They are standard from the start in stud games. Seven Card Stud has antes and no blinds at all.
Big blind ante
Modern tournaments mostly use the big blind ante: instead of every player posting a small amount, the player in the big blind posts the entire table’s ante on everyone’s behalf.
The total contributed is the same, but it is far faster. One action instead of nine, with no dealer collecting chips from each seat. It has become the standard in live and online tournaments alike, and it noticeably increased the number of hands played per hour.
Strategic effect
Once antes are in play, the pot is larger before anyone acts, which shifts correct strategy substantially:
- Stealing the blinds becomes more profitable, because there is more to win
- Defending the big blind becomes more necessary, because you are already invested
- Short stacks must act sooner, since the ante erodes them every orbit even when folding
The combined effect of rising blinds and antes is what turns the late stages of a tournament into a series of all-in decisions rather than a post-flop game.
