In short
An expanding wild grows to fill its entire reel, turning every position on that reel wild. Landing them on multiple reels can complete every payline at once.
An expanding wild fills its whole reel. Land one anywhere on reel 3 and the entire reel becomes wild, covering every row.
Why they are powerful
On a 5×3 grid with 20 paylines, an expanding wild on the middle reel contributes to every single line simultaneously. Two expanding wilds on adjacent reels can complete most of the paytable at once.
This makes them among the most valuable base-game features when they land, and correspondingly rare.
The classic implementation
The mechanic is most associated with Book of Ra and the enormous number of games that followed it, the “book” genre, where a single expanding symbol is selected at random at the start of free spins.
That structure is worth understanding because it is everywhere:
- Three book scatters trigger free spins
- One regular symbol is chosen at random as the special expanding symbol for the round
- Whenever it lands, it expands across its reel and pays as though on every line, ignoring the usual left-to-right adjacency rule
- The chosen symbol determines the value of the round
If a high-paying symbol is selected the round can be enormous. If a low symbol is selected it usually is not. The random selection is the entire variance of the feature, which is why book games feel like they are decided before the spins begin.
Combinations
- Expanding + sticky: expands and remains for subsequent spins
- Expanding + multiplier: the filled reel carries a multiplier
- Expanding on trigger only: restricted to free spins, which is most common
Reel restrictions
Expanding wilds are typically limited to the middle reels, 2, 3 and 4, and excluded from reel 1. On reel 1 they would guarantee a win begins on every payline, which would require substantial rebalancing elsewhere in the maths.
Common questions
What is an expanding wild?
A wild that fills its entire reel, turning every position on that reel wild. On a 20-payline grid one expanding wild on the middle reel contributes to every single line at once.
How do Book of Ra style slots work?
Three book scatters trigger free spins, then one regular symbol is selected at random as the special expanding symbol for the round. If a high-paying symbol is chosen the round can be enormous; if not, it usually is not.
