Lightning Roulette is Evolution’s enhanced roulette format and one of the most played live casino games in the world. It is standard European roulette with a multiplier layer added.
How it works
After betting closes, between one and five numbers are struck by “lightning” and assigned random multipliers from 50x to 500x.
If the ball lands on a struck number and you had a straight-up bet on it, your win is multiplied accordingly.
What it costs
The multipliers are funded by reducing the standard straight-up payout:
- Standard roulette: straight up pays 35:1
- Lightning Roulette: straight up pays 29:1
That reduction applies to every straight-up win, whether or not the number was struck.
The net effect on house edge:

Outside bets are unaffected. They pay normally and do not receive multipliers, so red/black on a Lightning table is identical in value to red/black anywhere else.
The honest assessment
An extra 0.29% is a modest price for a substantially more dramatic game, and Lightning Roulette is priced far better than most game show formats.
What it does is transform the volatility of inside betting. A straight-up bettor now wins less often in real terms, 29:1 rather than 35:1 on ordinary hits, with a small chance of an enormous multiplier. The expected return is nearly unchanged; the distribution is completely different.
Whether that trade is worth 0.29% depends entirely on whether you want the swings.
Variants
XXXtreme Lightning Roulette adds chain lightning and multipliers up to 2,000x, with straight-up payouts reduced further. The house edge rises again, to around 3.4% depending on bet type.
The pattern holds throughout the category: more spectacle, funded from the base payout.
