Partial Cash Out

Also known as Part Cash Out, Partial Settlement

By Reviewed Editorial policy

In short

Partial cash out settles part of a bet early while leaving the rest running. It lets you secure some return without abandoning the full potential payout, at the cost of the same margin applied proportionally.

Partial cash out splits a bet. Take 50% of the available cash-out value now, and the remaining 50% of the stake stays live at the original odds.

Worked example

A £20 bet at 8.00 (£160 potential return). Your selection is well placed and cash out is offered at £90.

Take £45, half the offer, and:

  • You bank £45 immediately, already more than your £20 stake
  • £10 of stake remains live at 8.00, returning £80 if it wins
  • Total if it wins: £125
  • Total if it loses: £45

Compared with full cash out (£90 guaranteed) or letting it ride (£160 or £0), partial sits between them.

The cost

The same cash-out margin applies to the portion you settle. Partial cash out is not cheaper per pound. It simply applies the charge to less of the bet.

So the expected value is still negative relative to letting the bet run, just less negative than a full cash out. If the original bet was good, every pound you take out early reduces its value.

Where it genuinely helps

The honest case for partial cash out is psychological rather than mathematical, and that is not nothing.

Banking your stake removes the possibility of losing money on the bet, which for many people makes it far easier to leave the remainder alone rather than panic-settling the whole thing at a worse moment. If the alternative is a full cash out driven by nerves, partial is the better outcome.

The cheaper version of the same idea is hedging part of your position on a betting exchange, which gives you precise control over how much to lock in while paying only commission.

Common questions

How does partial cash out work?

You settle part of the bet now and leave the rest running at the original odds. Taking half of a £90 offer on a £20 bet at 8.00 banks £45 while £10 of stake stays live for a further £80 if it wins.

Is partial cash out better than full cash out?

It applies the same margin to less of the bet, so it is less costly rather than cheaper per pound. The honest case for it is psychological: banking your stake often makes it easier to leave the remainder alone.
