In short

The prize pool is the total money available to be won, funded from ticket or entry fees after the operator's deduction. In pari-mutuel games the pool is divided among winners, so more winners means smaller individual prizes.

The prize pool is what is left after the operator takes its cut. Everything paid out comes from it.

Structure

A typical lottery allocation:

Component Share
Prize pool ~50%
Good causes ~25%
Duty / tax ~12%
Retailer commission ~5%
Operating costs ~8%

The prize pool is then divided between tiers, jackpot, five numbers, four numbers, and so on, by a published formula. The jackpot usually takes the largest share, with lower tiers often paying fixed amounts regardless of how many win them.

Shared pools mean variable prizes

In pari-mutuel structures, the prize per winner depends entirely on how many winners there are.

Ten winners sharing a £5 million jackpot receive £500,000 each. One winner receives the lot. Your ticket’s value therefore depends not only on whether it matches but on how many other people chose the same numbers, which is the one variable you can influence, by avoiding popular combinations.

Guaranteed pools

Some products guarantee a minimum prize pool regardless of sales. If entries fall short, the operator makes up the difference, an overlay.

This appears in:

  • Guaranteed prize pool contests in daily fantasy sports
  • Promotional bingo rooms with guaranteed jackpots
  • Lottery must-be-won draws

An overlay is the rare case where the money genuinely comes from the operator rather than from players, which makes expected return exceed the normal takeout. Advantage players in DFS specifically target overlaid contests for this reason, and operators monitor them closely.

Fixed versus pooled prizes

Lower lottery tiers often pay fixed amounts. £30 for three numbers regardless of how many people match. This means the operator carries the risk on those tiers, and it is why the jackpot absorbs the variability.

Common questions

How much of a lottery ticket goes to prizes?

Around 50%, with roughly 25% to good causes, 12% to duty and the rest to retailers and operating costs. The prize pool is then split between tiers by a published formula.

What is an overlay in a prize pool?

A guaranteed pool larger than the entries collected, with the operator covering the shortfall. It is the rare case where money comes from the operator rather than players, so expected return can exceed the normal takeout.
