Remaining Prizes

Also known as Prizes Remaining, Unclaimed Prizes, Prize Checker

By Reviewed Editorial policy

In short

Remaining prizes are the unclaimed prizes still available in a scratch card game. Because prizes are pre-allocated to a finite print run, a game with its top prizes already claimed is genuinely worse value at the same price.

Every instant win game is printed with a fixed number of prizes. As they are claimed, fewer remain, and tickets continue to be sold.

The thing worth knowing

A scratch card game whose top prizes have all been claimed is still on sale at full price.

This is not a scandal; it is how the product works. Operators print millions of tickets and cannot recall them when a jackpot is won. Most jurisdictions require remaining-prize data to be published for exactly this reason.

But it means the same ticket, at the same price, can have materially different expected value depending on when you buy it.

A worked example

A £5 game launches with:

  • 5 × £250,000
  • 30 × £10,000
  • 500 × £1,000

Eighteen months later, all five top prizes and 28 of the £10,000 prizes have been claimed. The remaining tickets cannot win £250,000 at all, and the expected value has fallen by several percentage points, while the price is unchanged.

Where to check

Lottery operators publish remaining-prize tables on their websites, usually under a “prize checker” or “remaining prizes” section. UK National Lottery, most US state lotteries and most European operators all do.

Some jurisdictions also require games to be withdrawn from sale once the top prize is claimed. This is the exception rather than the rule, and it is worth knowing which regime applies where you buy.

What to look for

  • Top prizes remaining relative to launch. All claimed means the headline is unavailable
  • Proportion of tickets sold. A game 90% sold with most prizes gone is worse than a new game
  • Recently launched games generally offer the fullest prize structure

The honest scale of the effect

This is real but modest. Buying a fresh game rather than a depleted one might improve your expected return from 60% to 65%. An improvement on a bet that remains substantially negative.

It is worth doing because it costs nothing, not because it changes the fundamental proposition. The best available scratch card is still considerably worse value than almost any casino game.

Common questions

Can a scratch card still be sold after the top prize is won?

Yes, at full price. Prizes are allocated at manufacture and operators cannot recall millions of printed tickets. Most jurisdictions require remaining-prize data to be published for exactly this reason.

How much does checking remaining prizes help?

Modestly but for free. Buying a fresh game rather than a depleted one might improve expected return from 60% to 65%, which is an improvement on a bet that remains substantially negative.
