In short
Sharp money is betting volume from people the sportsbook considers informed and consistently profitable. Books move lines quickly in response to it, even when the amounts are small.
Sharp money is the money books actually respect. The defining feature is not size but track record, a £500 bet from a known winning account moves a line further than £50,000 spread across recreational accounts.
How books identify sharps
Not primarily by profit, which is noisy over small samples. The main signal is closing line value: does this account consistently take prices that improve before the event starts?
A bettor who takes −3 and watches it move to −4 repeatedly is beating the market’s final assessment. That pattern shows up long before profit does, and it is what triggers limits.
Other markers: betting immediately on opening lines, betting unusual or low-liquidity markets, and stake sizes that scale with apparent confidence rather than staying flat.
What happens to identified sharps
Traditional bookmakers restrict them. Maximum stakes drop from thousands to tens of pounds, sometimes within weeks of an account showing the pattern. This is legal, widespread and rarely explained.
It is the main structural reason serious bettors use betting exchanges, which profit from commission on volume and therefore have no reason to exclude winners.
Following sharp money
Services that report where sharp money is going are a substantial industry, and the value is limited for reasons worth understanding.
By the time a move is visible and reported, the price has already moved. The edge existed at the original number. And the signals used. reverse line movement, sudden steam. Are widely watched, which erodes them.
The more useful lesson from sharp money is methodological rather than tactical: sharps win by taking prices before the market corrects, not by picking more winners. The measurable skill is beating the closing line.
Common questions
How do bookmakers identify sharp bettors?
Mainly through closing line value rather than profit, since profit is noisy over small samples. Betting openers immediately, taking unusual markets, and stake sizes that scale with confidence are all additional markers.
Can I profit by following sharp money?
Rarely. By the time a move is visible and reported, the price has moved and the edge existed at the original number. The useful lesson from sharps is methodological: they win by taking prices before the market corrects.
