Welcome Bonus

Also known as Sign-Up Bonus, New Player Bonus, First Deposit Bonus

By Reviewed Editorial policy

In short

A welcome bonus is the offer made to new customers on their first deposit, usually a percentage match plus free spins. Its value depends almost entirely on the wagering requirement, not the headline amount.

The welcome bonus is the industry’s main customer acquisition tool. “100% up to £200 plus 100 free spins” is the standard shape.

Reading past the headline

The headline number tells you almost nothing. Three things determine whether an offer is worth taking:

The wagering requirement and what it applies to. 35x on the bonus alone is very different from 35x on deposit plus bonus. The second is double the obligation for the same advertised number.

Game weighting. If slots count 100% and everything else counts 10%, the offer is only usable on slots.

Max bet rule. Usually around £5. Breaching it once voids the bonus at most operators, and this is the single most common reason a cleared bonus is confiscated.

A worked comparison

Offer A Offer B
Headline 200% up to £500 50% up to £100
Wagering 50x (deposit + bonus) 20x (bonus only)
Deposit £100 £200 bonus £50 bonus
Turnover required £15,000 £1,000
Expected cost at 96% RTP £600 £40

Offer A is four times larger and fifteen times harder to clear. It is not a better offer; it is a worse one with a bigger number on it.

The realistic expected value

At typical requirements, most welcome bonuses have expected value near zero or slightly negative. The expected cost of generating the required turnover usually exceeds the bonus itself.

This is not a scandal. It is arithmetic, and it is why the offers exist. Operators are buying customers, and the bonus is priced so that the acquisition cost is recovered.

What to actually check

  • Wagering multiple and its base
  • Which games count, and at what weighting
  • Max bet while the bonus is active
  • Expiry period
  • Maximum conversion: a cap on what the bonus can become
  • Whether winnings from free spins carry separate wagering

If a bonus makes you play longer, larger or differently than you intended, it has cost you something real regardless of whether it converted.

Common questions

How do I compare casino welcome bonuses?

By required turnover, not headline percentage. A 200% bonus at 50x on deposit plus bonus can demand £15,000 of wagering, while a 50% bonus at 20x on bonus only demands £1,000. The bigger offer is far worse.

Are welcome bonuses actually worth taking?

At typical requirements, expected value is near zero or slightly negative, because the cost of generating the turnover usually exceeds the bonus. That is arithmetic rather than a scandal: operators are buying customers.
