In short
An accumulator is the British term for a parlay. Several selections combined into one bet, with the odds multiplied and every leg required to win. Four or more selections is the usual threshold for the name.
Accumulator is the standard British and Irish word for what American books call a parlay. The mechanics are identical: combine selections, multiply the odds, and lose everything if one leg fails.
Naming by number
UK bookmakers name multiples by how many selections they contain:
| Selections | Name |
|---|---|
| 2 | Double |
| 3 | Treble |
| 4 | Fourfold (four-fold acca) |
| 5 | Fivefold |
| 6+ | Sixfold, sevenfold, and so on |
“Acca” informally means anything from four legs upward. A Saturday football acca of five or six Premier League matches is the archetype.
Calculating returns
With decimal odds you simply multiply, which is the main practical reason to switch your account away from fractions.
Five legs at 1.50, 2.10, 1.80, 1.40 and 2.50:
1.50 × 2.10 × 1.80 × 1.40 × 2.50 = 19.85
A £10 stake returns £198.50.
Full cover bets
British bookmakers offer structured multiples that cover every combination of selections, so that not all legs need to win:
- Trixie: 3 selections, 4 bets (3 doubles + 1 treble)
- Patent: 3 selections, 7 bets (adds 3 singles)
- Yankee: 4 selections, 11 bets
- Lucky 15: 4 selections, 15 bets (Yankee plus singles)
- Heinz: 6 selections, 57 bets
These cost more per unit stake, a £1 Lucky 15 costs £15, but return something if only one or two selections win. They are common in horse racing and are heavily promoted with consolation offers for a single winner.
Acca insurance
The near-universal promotion: place a five-fold or bigger, and if exactly one leg lets you down you get your stake back as a free bet.
It is worth less than it appears. The refund is usually bet credits rather than cash, is capped, and is funded by the compounded margin already built into the acca. It changes the shape of the return, not its expected value.
Common questions
What is an acca in betting?
British slang for an accumulator, a single bet combining four or more selections where every leg must win. Two selections is a double, three is a treble, and four is a fourfold. It is the same product Americans call a parlay.
Is acca insurance worth it?
Less than it appears. The refund is usually bet credits rather than cash, it is capped, and it is funded by the compounded margin already inside the acca. It changes the shape of the return, not its expected value.
