Bet Level

Also known as Bet Multiplier, Level, Coins Per Line

By Reviewed Editorial policy

In short

Bet level is a multiplier applied to your coin size on some slots, determining how many coins are staked per payline. Total stake is coin size multiplied by bet level multiplied by lines.

Bet level is one of three components that determine what a spin costs on games using the older staking model.

Total stake = coin size × bet level × number of paylines

A game with 20 lines, a coin size of £0.05 and bet level 3 costs 20 × 0.05 × 3 = £3.00 per spin.

Why the system exists

It comes from physical machines, where you inserted a number of coins of a given denomination per line. The structure survived into software largely by inheritance.

It is genuinely confusing, and most modern slots have abandoned it in favour of a single total-bet control. Where it survives, the confusion is worth guarding against. It is easy to raise bet level thinking you have made a small adjustment and quadruple your spend.

Bet level does not change RTP

Raising bet level multiplies both your stake and your potential return by the same factor. The RTP is unchanged.

The exceptions are worth knowing, because they run the other way:

  • Progressive jackpots frequently require maximum bet level to qualify. Hitting the jackpot combination below it may pay a fraction, or nothing
  • Some bonus features are only available at certain levels
  • Ante bet options, increasing your stake by 25% to double bonus trigger frequency, are a variant of the same idea, and usually offer slightly lower RTP than the standard game

The bonus max bet trap

The max bet rule attached to an active casino bonus caps your stake, typically around £5.

Because bet level multiplies, it is easy to cross that cap without noticing. A coin size that seems small at bet level 1 is five times larger at bet level 5. The game will accept the spin, and most operators will then void the bonus and any winnings from it.

Always check total stake rather than coin size when a bonus is active.

Common questions

What is bet level on a slot?

A multiplier applied to your coin size. Total stake is coin size multiplied by bet level multiplied by paylines, so a 20-line game at 5p coin size and bet level 3 costs £3.00 per spin.

Does raising bet level improve my odds?

No. It multiplies both stake and potential return equally, leaving RTP unchanged. The exceptions run the other way: some progressives require maximum bet to qualify, and ante bet options usually offer slightly lower RTP.
