Minimum Bet

Also known as Table Minimum, Min Bet, Minimum Stake

In short

The minimum bet is the smallest stake a game will accept. Low minimums often come paired with worse rules, so the cheapest-looking table is frequently the most expensive to play.

The minimum is the entry price per bet. In physical casinos it typically ranges from £2 to £25 depending on the game, the venue and the time of day; online minimums are far lower, often 10p or less.

The low-minimum trap

A £5 blackjack table sounds cheaper than a £25 one. It frequently is not.

Low-minimum tables are very often the ones paying 6:5 on blackjack instead of 3:2, which raises the house edge by about 1.39 percentage points. From roughly 0.5% to nearly 2%.

Per hour, at 80 hands:

  • £25 table, 3:2, 0.5% edge → expected cost about £10/hour
  • £5 table, 6:5, 1.9% edge → expected cost about £7.60/hour

The low table is still cheaper in absolute terms, but you are paying nearly four times as much per pound staked. If you were going to bet £25 anyway, the higher table is dramatically better value. The low-minimum table is only better if it genuinely lowers how much you bet.

Minimums and bankroll

The practical rule is that your bankroll should be a large multiple of the minimum, commonly 40 to 50 buy-ins of the table minimum for a session with reasonable survival odds.

Sitting at a table whose minimum is 5% of your bankroll means a normal losing run ends the session, which is how people end up depositing again.

Online

Online minimums are low enough that they are rarely the constraint. The relevant figure there is the bet level and coin size combination on slots, and whether a progressive jackpot requires a maximum bet to qualify, a detail that has cost people life-changing amounts.

Common questions
