Maximum Bet

Also known as Table Maximum, Max Bet, Betting Ceiling

By Reviewed Editorial policy

In short

The maximum bet is the largest stake a game accepts. It caps the operator's exposure and makes doubling-up systems mathematically impossible to sustain.

The maximum limits what can be staked on a single bet. It exists for two reasons, one obvious and one more interesting.

Exposure management

A casino’s edge only works across volume. A single very large bet has an outcome close to a coin flip regardless of the edge, and a run of them introduces variance the operator does not want.

High-roller tables have much higher maximums, sometimes in the hundreds of thousands, and are managed separately with their own risk limits.

Breaking progressive systems

The more consequential function. Martingale and similar doubling systems require an unlimited ceiling. The maximum guarantees the sequence terminates.

The typical spread between minimum and maximum is 1:500 or 1:1000. A £10 minimum table with a £5,000 maximum. From £10, doubling reaches the ceiling after nine consecutive losses, which happens often enough to matter.

At that point the system fails in the worst possible way: you have lost £5,110 and cannot place the bet that would recover it.

The bonus max bet is a different thing

Worth separating clearly, because conflating them is expensive.

The table maximum is a limit the game enforces, you cannot exceed it.

The max bet rule applies while a bonus is active, typically capping stakes around £5. The game will let you exceed it, and most operators will then void the bonus and any winnings from it.

This is the single most common cause of a confiscated balance. The table will happily accept a £20 spin while you have an active bonus with a £5 cap, and nothing will warn you.

Progressive jackpot qualification

Some progressive jackpot slots only pay the top prize on a maximum bet. Hitting the jackpot combination on a smaller stake pays a fraction, or nothing. This is disclosed in the game rules and is worth reading before playing any progressive.

Common questions

What is the typical spread between table minimum and maximum?

Usually 1:500 or 1:1000, so a £10 table might cap at £5,000 or £10,000. From a £10 base, doubling reaches a £5,000 ceiling after nine consecutive losses, at which point you are down £5,110 with no way to recover it.

Do progressive jackpots require a maximum bet?

Some do, and it has cost people very large amounts. Hitting the jackpot combination below the qualifying stake may pay a fraction or nothing. The condition is disclosed in the game rules and is worth reading first.
