Also known as Promo Code, Coupon Code, Voucher Code, Referral Code

In short
A bonus code is a string entered during registration or deposit to claim a specific offer. Codes are usually tied to affiliate tracking, and entering the wrong one, or none, can forfeit the offer permanently.
A bonus code activates a particular offer. Some operators apply promotions automatically; many require the code to be entered at a specific point.
Timing is usually unforgivable
The critical practical point: most codes must be entered before or during the qualifying deposit.
Claiming afterwards is generally impossible. Support will usually decline, and the offer is lost. This is the most common way people miss out on a welcome bonus they were entitled to.
If you intend to claim an offer, have the code ready before you start the deposit.
What codes are actually for
Three functions, and only the first is about you.
Affiliate attribution. Most codes identify which affiliate site sent you, so commission can be paid. This is the main reason codes exist at all.
Offer segmentation. Different codes carry different terms. A higher match with higher wagering, or a lower match with better terms. The same operator may run several simultaneously.
Campaign tracking. Measuring which channels convert.
Comparing codes
Because different codes give different terms, it is worth checking more than one source. An operator’s own site sometimes carries a better offer than an affiliate, and sometimes considerably worse.
The comparison should be on required turnover, not headline match, see welcome bonus for why a larger bonus with a higher multiplier is frequently the worse deal.
Where codes go wrong
- Expired codes. Affiliate sites frequently list codes long after they have lapsed
- Region restrictions. A code valid in one market silently fails in another
- One offer only. Claiming a no deposit bonus can disqualify you from the welcome offer at some operators
- Payment method exclusions apply regardless of the code
- Single use per household, enforced by device and address fingerprinting
If a code does not apply at deposit, stop before completing it. Depositing without the bonus attached is usually irreversible.
Common questions
When do I need to enter a bonus code?
Before or during the qualifying deposit, in almost all cases. Claiming afterwards is generally impossible and support will usually decline, so have the code ready before you start.
Why do bonus codes exist?
Mainly affiliate attribution, so commission can be paid to whichever site sent you. They also segment offers, since the same operator may run several codes with different terms simultaneously.
