Deposit Limit
Also known as Deposit Cap, Funding Limit, Deposit Restriction
By Abhinav VasudevanReviewed Editorial policy
In short
A deposit limit caps how much you can pay into a gambling account over a period. Decreases apply immediately while increases are subject to a cooling-off delay, which is what makes the tool effective.
A deposit limit is a ceiling on what you can pay into an account daily, weekly or monthly. Licensed operators in most regulated markets are required to offer them.
The asymmetry that makes it work
Decreases apply immediately. Increases do not.
Lowering a limit takes effect at once. Raising one requires a cooling-off period, typically 24 hours, and longer in some jurisdictions, before it takes effect.
This is the entire mechanism. A limit set while thinking clearly cannot be overridden in the moment when the impulse to deposit more arrives. By the time the increase takes effect, the moment has usually passed.
It is the most effective single measure available, it costs nothing, and it takes about thirty seconds to set.
Setting one sensibly
The right figure is an amount whose complete loss changes nothing material about your circumstances, see bankroll for the same test applied to a different question.
Set it lower than you think you need. A limit that never binds is doing nothing; the point is for it to bind occasionally.
Where to find it
Usually under Account → Responsible Gambling, Safer Gambling, or Limits. Some operators bury it deeper than others, which is itself informative.
In several jurisdictions operators are now required to prompt new customers to set one at registration.
What it does not do
- It is per-operator in most markets. A limit at one site does not affect another, so multiple accounts undermine it entirely
- It caps deposits, not losses. Winnings recycled into further play are not counted, see loss limit for the tool that addresses this
- It does not stop you playing with money already in the account
Related layers
- Loss limits: cap net losses rather than deposits
- Session limits: cap time
- Reality checks: periodic reminders
- Bank gambling blocks: cover every operator at once, and are the most robust option available to someone who does not want to self-exclude
Common questions
How quickly does a deposit limit take effect?
Decreases apply immediately. Increases require a cooling-off period, typically 24 hours and longer in some jurisdictions. That asymmetry is the entire mechanism, since it prevents an in-the-moment override.
What deposit limit should I set?
