Self-Exclusion

Also known as Self Exclude, Exclusion, Voluntary Exclusion

By Reviewed Editorial policy

In short

Self-exclusion is a formal request to be blocked from gambling for a set period. Once activated it cannot be reversed early, which is the entire point. The decision is made once and enforced afterwards.

Self-exclusion blocks your access to gambling for a period you choose. Licensed operators are required to offer it, to enforce it, and to stop marketing to you.

The key property

It cannot be cancelled early. Once set, the exclusion runs its full term.

This is deliberate and it is what makes the tool work. A decision made while thinking clearly is enforced later when you may not be, and no amount of contacting support will reverse it.

At the end of the period, most schemes also require a cooling-off period, typically 24 hours to seven days, after you request reinstatement, before access resumes.

Levels

Single operator: blocks one account. Easy to arrange and easy to circumvent by using another site, which limits its usefulness.

National schemes: block every licensed operator in the jurisdiction at once. This is the version that matters:

Scheme Jurisdiction
GamStop UK online
SENSE UK land-based casinos
MOSES UK betting shops
CRUKS Netherlands
Spelpaus Sweden
OASIS Germany
State programs Various US states

Blocking software. Gamban, BetBlocker and similar block gambling sites at device level. These complement rather than replace formal exclusion, and they cover unlicensed sites that national schemes cannot reach.

Bank blocks: most UK banks now offer a gambling transaction block, often with a cooling-off period before it can be removed. This is a genuinely useful additional layer.

What it does not cover

  • Unlicensed operators, which are outside any national scheme
  • Land-based venues, unless you use the separate land-based schemes
  • Other jurisdictions: a UK exclusion does not affect sites licensed elsewhere
  • Existing balances, which you should withdraw before excluding

If an operator breaches it

Accepting a bet from a self-excluded customer is a serious licensing breach, and regulators have issued substantial penalties for it.

If it happens, complain to the operator, then escalate to the regulator and to the relevant ADR body. Refunds of losses incurred after a valid exclusion are frequently obtained.

Common questions

Can I cancel a self-exclusion early?

No, and that is the point. It runs the full term you chose, and no amount of contacting support will reverse it. Most schemes also require a cooling-off period after you request reinstatement.

What does self-exclusion not cover?

Unlicensed operators, land-based venues unless you use separate schemes, other jurisdictions, and any balance you left behind. Blocking software and bank gambling blocks cover the gaps a single scheme leaves.
