Gaming License

Also known as Gambling Licence, Gaming Licence, Operating Licence, Casino License

By Reviewed Editorial policy

In short

A gaming licence is regulatory authorisation to operate gambling. What it actually guarantees varies enormously by jurisdiction. The strongest licences enforce fund segregation and dispute resolution, the weakest verify little.

A gaming licence authorises an operator to offer gambling. Every legitimate site displays one, and the differences between them are far larger than the presence of a logo suggests.

What a strong licence provides

  • Segregated player funds: your balance held separately from operating capital, so it survives operator insolvency
  • RNG certification by an accredited laboratory
  • Verified RTP matching advertised figures
  • KYC and AML obligations
  • Safer gambling requirements: limits, self-exclusion, staff training
  • Independent dispute resolution with a binding ombudsman
  • Advertising standards
  • Meaningful enforcement: fines, conditions, revocation

The tiers

Strong: UK Gambling Commission, Malta, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Sweden, Denmark, Ontario, most US state regulators. Substantive requirements, genuine enforcement, real dispute resolution.

Moderate. Alderney, Kahnawake, and various national regulators with narrower scope or lighter enforcement.

Weak: Curaçao, Anjouan, and similar. Historically minimal verification and effectively no dispute resolution. Curaçao’s regime has been reformed, with direct licensing replacing the old master-licence system, though the practical effect is still being established.

How to check

Do not trust the footer logo. Licence badges are trivially copied, and cloned sites frequently display genuine-looking credentials belonging to someone else.

Instead:

  1. Note the licence number shown on the site
  2. Go to the regulator’s own website directly. Type the address, do not follow a link from the casino
  3. Search their public register for that number
  4. Confirm the licensed entity matches the site you are on, including the domain

Every serious regulator maintains a searchable public register. If a number does not appear, or the domain is not listed, that is conclusive.

What no licence guarantees

A licence confirms the odds are what the operator says they are. It does not make them favourable, every licensed game still carries a house edge, and certification verifies the edge rather than removing it.

Common questions

How do I check if a casino licence is real?

Note the licence number on the site, then go directly to the regulator's own website by typing the address, and search their public register. Confirm the licensed entity and the specific domain are both listed.

Which gambling licences are strongest?

The UK Gambling Commission, Malta, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Sweden, Denmark, Ontario and most US state regulators. Curacao and similar offshore jurisdictions provide substantially weaker protection and dispute resolution.
