Random Number Generator (RNG)

Also known as RNG, PRNG, Random Number Generation

In short

An RNG is the algorithm that determines every outcome in an online casino game. It runs continuously and selects the result the instant you press spin. The reel animation simply displays a decision already made.

Every outcome in a digital casino game comes from a random number generator. Understanding what it does, and does not. Settles most of the folklore around slots.

How it actually works

The RNG generates numbers continuously, thousands per second, whether anyone is playing or not. When you press spin, it takes the number available at that instant and maps it to an outcome.

Three consequences follow, and they are the source of most slot misconceptions:

  • The result is fixed before the animation. Stopping the reels early changes nothing
  • Machines are never “due”. Each draw is independent. A game that has not paid in 500 spins has exactly the same probability on spin 501.
  • Nobody took your jackpot. Someone winning on a machine you just left would have needed to press spin within the same millisecond to draw the same number

Pseudo-random, and why that is fine

Casino RNGs are pseudo-random: deterministic algorithms that produce sequences statistically indistinguishable from randomness, seeded from an unpredictable source.

True randomness from physical processes is unnecessary and impractical at the required speed. What matters is that the output passes statistical testing and that the seed cannot be predicted, and certified RNGs are tested extensively against both criteria.

Certification

Licensed operators must have their RNGs independently tested by accredited laboratories, eCOGRA, GLI, iTech Labs and similar. Testing covers statistical distribution, unpredictability, and whether actual RTP matches the stated figure over large samples.

This is what a gaming licence meaningfully guarantees. An unlicensed site has had nothing verified, and there is no mechanism by which a player could detect a manipulated RNG from play alone.

What the RNG does not do

It does not make the game fair in the sense of even-money. The house edge is built into the paytable and the symbol weighting, not into the RNG.

A perfectly random game with a 94% RTP is still a 94% game. Certification confirms the odds are what the operator says they are, not that they favour you.

Provably fair

Provably fair systems, used mainly by crypto casinos, let players verify individual results cryptographically rather than relying on a certification body. It is a different trust model addressing the same problem.

Common questions

How does a casino RNG work?

It generates numbers continuously, thousands per second, whether or not anyone is playing. When you press spin it takes the number available at that instant and maps it to an outcome.

Are casino RNGs truly random?

They are pseudo-random: deterministic algorithms producing output statistically indistinguishable from randomness, seeded unpredictably. Certified RNGs are tested extensively for distribution and unpredictability by accredited labs.
