Handle
Also known as Betting Handle, Volume

In short
Handle is the total amount wagered with a sportsbook or casino over a period, before any winnings are paid out. It is the industry's headline volume figure and is much larger than actual revenue.
Handle is turnover viewed from the operator’s side of the counter. When a regulator announces that a state took $600 million in sports betting handle last month, that is the total staked, not what anyone made.
Handle, hold and revenue
Three figures, routinely confused in reporting:
- Handle: total staked. $600 million.
- Hold percentage: the share the operator keeps after paying winners. Typically 7–10% in sports betting.
- Gross gaming revenue: handle × hold. Roughly $48 million at 8%.
Headlines usually lead with handle because it is the biggest number. Revenue is an order of magnitude smaller, and profit smaller still after promotional spend, taxes and marketing.
Why sportsbook hold is lower than casino edge
A sportsbook’s theoretical margin on a two-way market might be 4.5%, but realised hold runs higher, often 7% or more, because bettors place parlays, which compound the margin on each leg, and because bettors are collectively biased toward favourites and overs.
It also runs lower than casino figures because sports bets turn over slowly. A single bet is placed once and settled once. A slot player recycles the same money hundreds of times an hour, so a 4% slot edge extracts far more from a given deposit than a 7% sports hold does.
Reading the numbers
Handle is a measure of activity, not harm or profit. A market with growing handle and flat revenue is one where competition has compressed margins. A market with flat handle and growing revenue is usually one where the product mix has shifted toward higher-margin bets, typically parlays and in-play.
Common questions
Is handle the same as revenue?
No, and the gap is large. Handle is everything staked before payouts. Revenue is handle multiplied by hold, which is typically 7% to 10% in sports betting. A market with $600 million handle produces around $48 million of revenue.
Why do headlines quote handle rather than revenue?
Because it is the biggest number available. Handle measures activity, not profit or harm. A market with rising handle and flat revenue is one where competition has compressed margins rather than one that is becoming more lucrative.
