Hold Percentage
Also known as Hold, Win Percentage, Actual Hold
By Abhinav VasudevanReviewed Editorial policy
In short
Hold percentage is the share of total money wagered that an operator actually keeps after paying out winners. It is the realised version of the theoretical house edge, and in sports betting it is usually higher than the theoretical margin suggests.
Hold is what the operator ended up keeping. The house edge is what it theoretically should keep. The two differ, and the gap is informative.
Theoretical versus actual
A sportsbook pricing a two-way market at a 4.5% margin has a theoretical hold of 4.5%, but only if money lands evenly on both sides, which it never does.
Realised hold in regulated sports betting typically lands between 7% and 11%. The difference comes from bettor behaviour rather than pricing:
- Parlays multiply the margin on every leg. A four-leg parlay built from 4.5% markets carries an effective margin closer to 17%.
- Favourite and over bias. Recreational money leans heavily toward favourites winning and totals going over, so books can shade those prices and still take the action.
- Unbalanced books. Operators increasingly take a position rather than balancing perfectly, which raises variance and, over time, hold.
In casino games the two figures converge, because the mathematics is fixed and the sample enormous. Slot hold reported by an operator will sit very close to 100% minus the games’ RTP.
Why it is worth knowing
Hold is the honest answer to “what does this cost me”. A market advertised as having tight prices may still have double-digit hold if most of its volume is parlays. When comparing operators, the theoretical margin on a single market is the useful number; when comparing products, hold tells you where the money actually goes.
Common questions
What is a normal sportsbook hold?
Realised hold in regulated sports betting usually lands between 7% and 11%, even though the theoretical margin on a single market might be 4.5%. Parlay volume and predictable bettor biases push the actual figure well above the priced one.
Why is sportsbook hold lower than casino house edge?
Because sports bets turn over slowly. A bet is placed once and settled once, while a slot player recycles the same money hundreds of times an hour. A 4% slot edge extracts far more from a deposit than a 7% sports hold does.
Is hold the same as margin?
Not quite. Margin is theoretical and assumes money lands proportionally across outcomes. Hold is what the operator actually kept. The gap between them tells you how much of the book's income comes from bettor behaviour rather than pricing.
