Hit Frequency

Also known as Hit Rate, Win Frequency, Hit Ratio

By Reviewed Editorial policy

In short

Hit frequency is the percentage of spins that return anything at all. A 25% hit frequency means one spin in four pays, though many of those pay less than the stake.

Hit frequency counts how often a spin returns something. It is one of the more useful slot statistics and one of the least published.

Typical ranges

Volatility Hit frequency
Low 30–45%
Medium 20–30%
High 15–25%
Extreme 10–20%

The distinction people miss

A hit is not a win. Most registered hits on a modern slot return less than the stake.

A £1 spin returning 40p counts as a hit. The reels celebrate it, the counter ticks up, a sound plays, and you are down 60p. On many games, more than half of all hits are net losses of this kind.

This is the losses disguised as wins effect, and it is well documented in gambling research. Games present sub-stake returns with the same audiovisual treatment as genuine wins, and players consistently overestimate how often they are winning as a result.

Hit frequency therefore describes how often the game appears to pay, which is not the same as how often it actually does.

Hit frequency versus RTP

The two are independent. A game can hit constantly and still return 94%, or hit rarely and return 97%.

  • High hit frequency, low RTP: frequent small sub-stake returns, steady decline
  • Low hit frequency, high RTP: long dry spells, large occasional wins

Neither pattern tells you anything about the other. RTP is the total returned; hit frequency is how it is distributed; volatility describes the spread.

Bonus trigger frequency

The more important figure, and the one that actually governs a session on a high-volatility game.

Since most of the return sits in the bonus round, a game triggering once in 300 spins delivers most of its RTP through an event you will rarely see. Overall hit frequency can be 25% while the meaningful return arrives 0.3% of the time.

Where a provider publishes both figures, some now do, in the game information panel, the trigger frequency is the one worth reading.

Common questions

What is a good hit frequency for a slot?

Low volatility games hit 30% to 45% of spins, high volatility games 15% to 25%. Neither figure tells you anything about RTP, since a game can hit constantly and still return only 94%.

Is every hit a win?

No, and this matters. Most registered hits return less than the stake. A £1 spin returning 40p counts as a hit, triggers celebration audio, and leaves you 60p down. This is the losses-disguised-as-wins effect.
