Scatter Symbol
Also known as Scatter, Scatters, Bonus Symbol

In short
A scatter symbol pays or triggers a feature regardless of where it lands, ignoring paylines entirely. Three scatters anywhere on the reels is the most common way a free spins round begins.
A scatter ignores position. Where every other symbol must land along a payline to count, a scatter counts wherever it falls.
What they do
Two functions, sometimes both in the same game:
Trigger features. Three or more scatters anywhere on the reels starts the free spins round. This is the standard trigger across the industry, so standard that “landing three scatters” is effectively shorthand for reaching the bonus.
Pay directly. Some games pay a scatter win in addition, typically a multiple of total stake rather than line bet, since scatters are not tied to a line.
The trigger frequency is the number that matters
Most of a modern slot’s RTP sits inside the bonus round rather than the base game. On many high-volatility titles, 60% to 80% of the total return comes from free spins.
So how often scatters land is effectively how often the game pays anything meaningful. Typical trigger rates:
| Volatility | Bonus trigger |
|---|---|
| Low | 1 in 80–120 spins |
| Medium | 1 in 120–200 spins |
| High | 1 in 200–400 spins |
At 1 in 300, a player with a bankroll covering 150 spins will most often never see the part of the game where the money is. This is the single most useful thing to understand about matching a slot to a bankroll.
Retriggers
Landing further scatters during free spins usually awards additional spins. Games vary in whether this is unlimited or capped, and an uncapped retrigger is a meaningful contributor to the max win ceiling.
Scatters and wilds are different
A wild substitutes for other symbols to complete combinations. A scatter does not substitute for anything. It works on its own terms.
In almost every game, wilds do not substitute for scatters. This is deliberate: allowing it would make bonus triggers far more frequent and would require the rest of the maths to be rebalanced.
Common questions
What does a scatter symbol do?
It pays or triggers a feature regardless of where it lands, ignoring paylines. Three scatters anywhere on the reels is the standard way a free spins round begins.
Do wilds substitute for scatters?
Almost never. Allowing it would sharply increase bonus trigger frequency, and since most of a slot's RTP sits inside the bonus, the entire maths model would need rebalancing.
