In short
A live dealer is a real person operating a casino game streamed to online players. Their role is to deal, spin and present. They have no influence over outcomes and no stake in results.
A live dealer runs the game in front of a camera. They deal cards, spin the wheel, announce results and interact with players through the chat function.
What they do and do not control
They control the physical action. They do not control the outcome, they cannot see your cards or your balance, and they have no financial stake in whether you win.
Dealers are salaried employees of the game provider, Evolution, Playtech, Pragmatic, not of the casino you are playing at. They are typically unaware which operator any given player is using.
Tipping is possible on most platforms and is entirely optional. It has no effect on anything.
The presentation is the product
Dealer engagement is a deliberate and significant part of live casino. Dealers are trained on camera presence, conversation and pacing, and they read and respond to chat by name.
This is the main thing live casino offers over RNG games, which are mechanically identical and considerably faster. A player choosing live over software is largely choosing the social layer, and the studios invest in it accordingly.
The flip side is worth naming: a warm, attentive host is a retention mechanic. The friendliness is genuine and it is also the job.
Game show hosts
Game show formats, Crazy Time, Monopoly Live, Deal or No Deal, use presenters rather than croupiers, with a much more performative style.
These games typically carry higher house edges than classic tables, often 3% to 5% against roulette’s 2.7%. The entertainment is real and so is the price of it.
Studios and shifts
Dealers work from studios in Latvia, Malta, Romania, the Philippines, Colombia and elsewhere, on rotating shifts covering 24 hours.
Some operators run dedicated tables branded to a single casino, sometimes located in a partner venue. These are otherwise identical to the shared tables.
Common questions
Can a live dealer influence the outcome?
No. They deal and spin but have no control over results, cannot see your cards or balance, and have no financial stake in whether you win. They are employed by the game provider, not by your casino.
Should I tip a live dealer?
It is entirely optional and has no effect on anything. Dealers are salaried and typically do not know which operator any given player is using.
