Season-Long Fantasy

Also known as Season Long, Redraft, Fantasy League, Traditional Fantasy

By Reviewed Editorial policy

In short

Season-long fantasy runs across an entire sporting season, with the same squad managed through drafts, trades and waivers. It rewards long-term management rather than the single-slate optimisation of DFS.

Season-long fantasy is the original format. You draft a squad before the season, manage it through injuries and form, and compete against the same opponents for months.

The structure

  • Draft: snake or auction, held before the season
  • Weekly lineups: choose which of your squad to start
  • Waiver wire: claim unowned players during the season
  • Trades: negotiated with other managers
  • Playoffs: most leagues finish with a knockout stage

Formats

Redraft: the squad dissolves at the end of the season and everyone drafts fresh next year. The most common format.

Keeper: retain a small number of players into the following season, which adds value to drafting young players.

Dynasty: retain the entire squad indefinitely, with rookie drafts each year. Much deeper strategically and a multi-year commitment.

Against DFS

Season-long DFS
Duration Whole season One day or week
Skill emphasis Squad management, waivers, trades Single-slate optimisation
Opponents Usually friends or colleagues Open field, often professionals
Rake Often none (private leagues) 8–15%
Variance Lower, many weeks High, one slate

The rake difference is the most important row. A private season-long league among friends has no operator cut at all. The money is simply redistributed among players.

That makes it, unusually, a zero-sum rather than negative-sum activity. It is one of very few forms of competitive wagering where the participants are not collectively losing money to an operator.

Where the skill actually is

Drafting is the most discussed part and probably not the most decisive. Research and practitioner consensus both point to the waiver wire as the largest ongoing edge, identifying breakout players before the rest of the league does, week after week.

Trade negotiation and lineup decisions around byes and injuries matter more than most people assume; draft position matters less.

Common questions

Is season-long fantasy better value than DFS?

A private league takes no operator cut at all, making it zero-sum rather than negative-sum. That is unusual among competitive wagering, and it is the strongest structural argument for the format.

Where is the real edge in season-long fantasy?

The waiver wire rather than the draft. A draft is one event with limited information; the waiver wire is a weekly decision for months, and most leagues contain several managers who simply do not look.
