Stacking

Also known as Stack, Game Stack, Correlation

By Reviewed Editorial policy

In short

Stacking means selecting multiple players from the same team or game so their performances reinforce each other. It raises the ceiling of a lineup and is standard practice in DFS tournaments.

Stacking exploits correlation. A quarterback’s best games are usually games in which his receivers also scored, so rostering both means one good performance pays you twice.

The types

Team stack: a quarterback plus one or two of his own receivers. The foundational NFL stack.

Game stack: players from both teams in one match. If a game becomes a shootout, everyone in it scores, and this is the highest-ceiling construction available.

Bring-back: a team stack plus one opposing player, which captures the back-and-forth scoring that produces the highest-scoring games.

MLB stack: consecutive batters from one lineup, which capture the same rally together.

NBA stacking is generally weaker, because teammates partly compete for the same usage, one player’s strong game can reduce another’s.

Why it raises the ceiling

Uncorrelated players produce a lineup whose outcomes average out. Correlated players produce a lineup whose outcomes compound. Everything goes right together, or nothing does.

That widens the distribution: more very bad scores and more very good ones. In a GPP, where only the very top finishes matter, a wider distribution is strictly better even though the average is unchanged.

Why it is wrong for cash games

The same logic reverses in cash games. There you need a reliable median score, and correlation is the enemy of reliability. A stacked lineup fails entirely when the game script goes the other way.

Cash game lineups should generally be diversified across games, for the same reason a portfolio is.

Negative correlation

Some pairings actively work against each other and should be avoided:

  • A quarterback and the opposing defence
  • A running back and his own team’s passing game, in a game expected to be close
  • Two players competing for the same touches

The parallel

Stacking is the same idea as a same game parlay: correlated outcomes bundled together. The difference is that a sportsbook prices the correlation into the odds, while DFS pricing is per-player and does not, which is why stacking is a genuine edge in fantasy and a priced-in feature in betting.

Common questions

What is stacking in fantasy sports?

Selecting multiple players whose good games happen together, such as a quarterback and his receivers. One strong performance then pays you twice, widening the range of outcomes.

Should I stack in cash games?

No. Correlation widens the distribution, which helps in tournaments where only the top finishes matter and hurts in cash games where you need a reliable median. Cash lineups should be diversified across games.
