Asian Handicap

Also known as AH, Asian Line, Asian Lines

By Reviewed Editorial policy

In short

Asian handicap removes the draw from football betting by applying fractional goal handicaps. Quarter-goal lines split your stake across two handicaps, which is why these bets can win or lose only half.

Asian handicap is the most efficient way to bet football, and the most intimidating to read. Once the quarter-line notation makes sense, the rest is straightforward.

Why it exists

A standard football market has three outcomes, so a bet has two ways to lose. Asian handicap reduces it to two outcomes, one way to lose, by making a draw impossible or by refunding it.

The result is lower margin. Asian handicap markets routinely run at 2% where three-way markets run at 5%, because there is one fewer outcome to price.

The line types

Whole lines (0, −1, −2): the handicap can produce an exact tie, which is a push and returns your stake.

  • Back Team A at −1, they win 2–1 → adjusted 1–1 → stake returned

Half lines (−0.5, −1.5, +0.5): no push possible, since a half goal cannot be equalled.

  • Back Team A at −1.5, they win 2–1 → adjusted 0.5–1 → loses

Quarter lines (−0.25, −0.75, +0.25): the stake splits equally across the two nearest lines.

  • −0.25 = half at 0, half at −0.5
  • −0.75 = half at −0.5, half at −1

Working a quarter line

Back Team A at −0.75 for £100. That is £50 at −0.5 and £50 at −1.

  • Win by 2+ → both halves win
  • Win by exactly 1 → the −0.5 half wins, the −1 half pushes → half win
  • Draw or lose → both halves lose

This half-win / half-loss behaviour is what makes Asian handicap useful. It lets you take a position that is partially protected, which a three-way market cannot express.

Notation

Different books write quarter lines differently. All of these mean −0.75:

  • −0.75
  • −0.5, −1
  • −0.5/−1
  • 0.5 & 1

Nil lines are also common: 0 or draw no bet refunds the stake if the match is level, which is simply a zero handicap.

When to use it

Asian handicap is the default choice for football bettors who bet regularly, for the margin reason alone. The 0 line is a cheap way to back a team with draw protection; the quarter lines are useful when you lean one way but not strongly. The main cost is that the payouts are less dramatic, which is exactly why recreational money stays in the three-way market.

Common questions

What does -0.75 mean in Asian handicap?

Your stake splits equally across -0.5 and -1. Win by two or more and both halves win. Win by exactly one and you get a half win, since the -0.5 half wins and the -1 half pushes. Draw or lose and both halves lose.

Why does Asian handicap have lower margins?

Because removing the draw leaves two outcomes to price instead of three. Asian markets routinely run at 2% margin where the three-way equivalent runs at 5%, which is the main reason regular football bettors use them.
