Over/Under (Totals)
Also known as Totals, Over Under, O/U, Total Points

In short
An over/under bet is on the combined total of a match, goals, points or runs, rather than on who wins. The book sets a number and you bet whether the real figure lands above or below it.
Totals betting ignores the result entirely. A book posts a number, 2.5 goals, 47.5 points, 8.5 runs, and you bet whether the combined total finishes above or below it.
Reading it
Over 47.5 (−110) / Under 47.5 (−110)
- Final score 27–24 = 51 → over wins
- Final score 20–17 = 37 → under wins
The half point removes the possibility of a push. Whole-number totals can push: a total of 47 with a final score of 24–23 returns stakes.
Football totals
Football uses small numbers, and 2.5 goals is the most-bet line in world sport. Over 2.5 needs three goals; under 2.5 needs two or fewer.
Asian totals also exist, using quarter lines that split the stake in the same way Asian handicap does. Over 2.75 is half at over 2.5 and half at over 3.
The over bias
This is the most reliable behavioural pattern in totals markets: public money goes heavily on the over.
The reason is straightforward. Someone who has bet the over enjoys the whole game; someone who has bet the under spends it hoping nothing happens. Books know this and shade totals upward accordingly.
The implication is not that unders are automatically good value, the shading is priced in, but that totals markets in high-profile, heavily-bet games are more likely to be distorted than in obscure ones.
What actually moves totals
- Weather. Wind above about 15mph moves NFL totals down sharply. Rain matters less than most people assume in football.
- Pace. In basketball, possessions per game predicts totals far better than scoring ability does.
- Injuries to defenders move totals more than injuries to attackers, and are priced less efficiently.
- Referee assignment in football has a measurable effect on cards and penalties, less so on goals.
Totals markets generally carry slightly higher margin than spreads and attract less sharp money, which makes them softer but also noisier.
Common questions
What does over 2.5 goals mean?
Three or more goals in the match, counting both teams. Under 2.5 needs two or fewer. The half goal removes any possibility of a push, which is why totals are usually set on halves rather than whole numbers.
Why do more people bet the over?
Because someone who has backed the over enjoys watching the game, while an under backer spends it hoping nothing happens. Books know this and shade totals upward, so the bias is already priced rather than exploitable.
