Autoplay
Also known as Auto Spin, Auto Play, Turbo Spin
By Abhinav VasudevanReviewed Editorial policy
In short
Autoplay spins a slot repeatedly without further input, until a set number of spins or a stop condition is reached. Several regulators have restricted or banned it because removing the decision to continue is associated with increased harm.
Autoplay runs a set number of spins without you pressing anything. Stop conditions can usually be configured halt on a win above a threshold, on a bonus trigger, or when the balance falls below a limit.
Why it has been restricted
The UK banned autoplay on online slots in October 2021, alongside a minimum 2.5-second spin duration, a ban on losses-disguised-as-wins audio, and a ban on quick spin. Several other jurisdictions have followed with similar measures.
The regulatory reasoning is not that autoplay changes the odds. It does not. It is that removing the repeated decision to continue removes the natural pause where a player might stop.
Each manual spin is a small decision point. Autoplay eliminates several hundred of them per hour, and the research consistently associates continuous uninterrupted play with increased turnover and increased harm.
The turnover effect
The mathematical consequence is straightforward. Autoplay increases spins per hour substantially, commonly from 300–400 manual to 800–1,200 automated.
The house edge is charged per spin, so expected loss per hour rises in proportion. A 96% RTP game at £1 a spin costs about £14/hour manually and £40/hour on fast autoplay. The game has not changed; the rate of exposure has tripled.
Where it still exists
Autoplay remains available in many markets, and on live casino and table products in some jurisdictions where it is banned on slots.
Turbo or quick spin, reducing animation time rather than automating input, is separately restricted in the UK and permitted elsewhere. It has the same turnover effect without the removal of the decision.
If it is available
Setting loss limits and win thresholds within the autoplay configuration is meaningfully better than leaving it unbounded, and takes a few seconds. A deposit limit on the account is better still, because it applies regardless of what any individual game allows.
Common questions
Why was autoplay banned in the UK?
Not because it changes the odds, which it does not, but because removing the repeated decision to continue removes the natural pause where a player might stop. It was banned alongside quick spin in October 2021.
Does autoplay cost more?
Yes, indirectly. It raises spins per hour from roughly 350 to 1,000 or more, and since the house edge is charged per spin, expected loss per hour rises in proportion. The game has not changed, the rate of exposure has.
