Line
Also known as Betting Line, The Number

In short
The line is the number a sportsbook sets for a market. The points handicap, the total, or the odds themselves. Betting the line means accepting that number as the terms of your bet.
Line is American betting’s general-purpose word for the number attached to a market. Depending on context it means the point spread, the total, or the odds.
- “The line is −7”, a spread of seven points.
- “The line moved to 48.5”, the total.
- “What’s the line on the moneyline?”, the odds.
The line is not a prediction
This is the central misunderstanding. A sportsbook does not set the line where it thinks the result will land. It sets it where it expects money to divide evenly.
Those are different numbers whenever public opinion diverges from reality, which is often. A popular team will be given a larger spread than its actual strength justifies, because the book needs to attract money to the other side.
In practice modern books do not balance perfectly, they will take a position when confident, but the principle holds: the line reflects expected betting behaviour as much as expected outcomes.
Key numbers
In American football, margins of victory cluster heavily on 3 and 7, because of how scoring works. This makes those numbers disproportionately important:
- Moving from −2.5 to −3.5 crosses a margin that occurs in roughly 10% of games
- Moving from −6.5 to −7.5 crosses another common margin
Books know this, which is why lines stick at 3 and move in price rather than number, you will see −3 at −105, then −3 at −115, then −3 at −125, before it finally moves to −3.5. Buying half a point across a key number is expensive precisely because it is worth it.
Line shopping
Different books hold different lines on the same event. Betting −3 at one book instead of −3.5 at another is free value, and over a season line shopping is worth more than most handicapping.
This is the single most reliable edge available to a recreational bettor, and it requires no prediction at all, only accounts at several operators and the patience to check.
Common questions
Is the betting line the bookmaker's prediction?
No. It is set where the book expects money to divide evenly, which is a different number whenever public opinion diverges from reality. A popular team is routinely given a bigger spread than its actual strength justifies.
What are key numbers in betting?
Margins that occur far more often than others. In the NFL, 3 and 7 dominate because of how scoring works, so moving a line across them is expensive. Basketball has no such clustering, and half points matter far less there.
Does line shopping really matter?
It is the most reliable edge available to a recreational bettor and requires no prediction at all. Taking -3 at one book instead of -3.5 at another is free value, and over a season it outweighs most handicapping.
