Cluster Pays
Also known as Clusters, Cluster Wins, Grid Slot
By Abhinav VasudevanReviewed Editorial policy
In short
Cluster pays awards wins for groups of matching symbols touching horizontally or vertically, rather than along paylines. A cluster of five or more adjacent symbols typically pays.
Cluster pays abandons reels and lines entirely. Symbols land on a grid, commonly 6×6, 7×7 or 8×8, and any group of matching symbols touching orthogonally forms a cluster.
The rules
- Symbols must touch horizontally or vertically. Diagonal adjacency does not count in most games
- A minimum cluster size applies, usually 5 symbols
- Larger clusters pay progressively more, often steeply. A 20-symbol cluster may pay many times what two 10-symbol clusters would
- Position on the grid is irrelevant
Cascades are essential to the format
Cluster games almost always use cascading reels. Winning clusters are removed, symbols above drop down, and new ones fill from the top.
This matters more in cluster games than elsewhere, because dropping symbols frequently form new clusters, which cascade again. A single spin can produce long chains, and the biggest wins come almost entirely from chains rather than from an initial large cluster.
Many cluster games layer a multiplier that rises with each cascade in the chain.
What it feels like
Cluster games have high hit frequency, small clusters form constantly, combined with very high volatility, because the meaningful wins require long chains that are rare.
The result is a game that feels busy and active while steadily declining, punctuated by occasional large outcomes. This is a deliberate and effective design.
Notable examples
The format was popularised by NetEnt’s Aloha! Cluster Pays and Play’n GO’s Reactoonz, and is now a standard alternative to reel-based games across most studios.
Grid size varies the character substantially: a 5×5 grid produces frequent small clusters, while an 8×8 grid allows enormous ones but makes them rarer.
Value
As with every other mechanic on this list, cluster pays says nothing about RTP. It describes how wins are identified, not how much the game returns. Check the info panel.
Common questions
How do cluster pays slots work?
Symbols land on a grid and any group of five or more matching symbols touching horizontally or vertically pays. Position is irrelevant, and diagonal adjacency does not count in most games.
Why do cluster games always use cascades?
Because clusters must be cleared for new ones to form. Dropping symbols frequently create fresh clusters, and the biggest wins come almost entirely from long chains rather than from one large initial cluster.
