In short
A jackpot is the top prize in a lottery or gambling game. In lotteries it grows through rollovers when nobody matches all the numbers, and the advertised figure is usually an annuity value rather than cash.
The jackpot is the headline prize. In a lottery it is won by matching every drawn number; in a casino game it is the top payout.
The word
From poker. In a nineteenth-century variant, the pot could not be opened until a player held a pair of jacks or better, so the money accumulated across hands until someone could “open the jackpot”.
Advertised versus actual
Lottery jackpot figures are frequently not what the winner receives, and the gap is large:
Annuity versus lump sum. American lotteries advertise the annuity value, the total of 30 annual payments. The immediate cash option is typically 50% to 60% of that figure. A “$1 billion” jackpot is roughly $500 million in cash.
Tax. US lottery wins are subject to federal and often state tax, reducing the cash amount further. UK and most European lottery wins are tax-free, which is a genuine structural difference.
Splitting. Multiple winners share the prize equally. Large jackpots attract far more ticket sales, which substantially raises the chance of a split. This is the main reason a record jackpot is a worse bet than its size suggests.
The rollover mechanism
When nobody matches all numbers, the jackpot rolls over into the next draw. This is what allows lottery jackpots to reach enormous figures.
Most lotteries cap the number of rollovers, after which the prize must be won, it rolls down into lower prize tiers if nobody matches the top one. A must-be-won draw is the best value a lottery ever offers, for the same reason a must-drop jackpot is.
Casino jackpots
In slots, a progressive jackpot accumulates from a percentage of every bet and is funded out of the game’s RTP rather than added to it. A fixed jackpot is a set amount within the normal maths.
The distinction matters: a progressive slot’s base game returns less than an equivalent non-progressive one.
Common questions
Why is the advertised jackpot bigger than what winners receive?
In American lotteries the headline is the annuity total across 30 years, while the cash option is typically 50% to 60% of it before tax. Multiple winners also split the prize equally.
Where does the word jackpot come from?
From a nineteenth-century poker variant where the pot could not be opened until a player held a pair of jacks or better, so money accumulated across hands until someone could open the jackpot.
