Salary Cap

Also known as Cap, Budget, Salary

In short

In DFS, the salary cap is the budget available to build a lineup, with each player carrying a price based on expected performance. Finding players priced below their likely output is the core skill.

Every DFS contest gives you a fixed budget, commonly $50,000 on DraftKings or $60,000 on FanDuel. To fill a roster of positions.

Each player has a price set by the operator, based on expected output. Elite players cost a large share of the cap; marginal players cost little.

The core problem

You cannot afford a roster of the best players. The cap forces trade-offs, and the skill is in finding value: players whose expected points exceed what their price implies.

The standard measure is points per dollar. A player projected for 30 points at $6,000 offers better value than one projected for 40 at $9,000, and building around value lets you afford stars elsewhere.

Where value comes from

Prices are set in advance, usually days before the slate, and do not always update as circumstances change. The reliable sources of mispricing:

  • Late injury news. A backup promoted to a starting role retains a backup’s price. This is the single largest source of DFS value and the reason late swap matters
  • Role changes: a player moved up the batting order or into a larger offensive role
  • Matchup: pricing is generally less responsive to opponent quality than it should be
  • Pace and game environment: projected high-scoring games lift every player in them

Pricing differs by operator

The same player is priced differently on different sites, because each operator uses its own model and its own scoring system.

Playing the same lineup across operators is therefore a mistake. A construction that is optimal under DraftKings’ pricing and scoring is frequently not under FanDuel’s.

Cap strategy by contest type

Cash games: prioritise floor and certainty. Use the cap on players with reliable volume, and avoid leaving salary unspent.

GPPs: prioritise upside and differentiation. Paying up for a low-owned expensive player can be correct precisely because few others will.

Leaving significant salary unused is almost always an error. The cap is a resource, and unspent budget is foregone expected points.

Common questions

How does a DFS salary cap work?

You get a fixed budget, commonly $50,000, to fill a roster. Each player is priced by expected output, so you cannot afford all the best players and must find points per dollar value.

Where does DFS salary cap value come from?

Stale pricing. Prices are set days ahead and do not always update, so late injury news creating a promoted starter at a backup's price is the single largest source of value.
